Rocca di Frassinello's project was born from the idea to replicate the excellence model of Castellare di Castellina in a new territory.
The choice fell on the land of Maremma, not focusing on the stated area of Bolgheri, but seeking for equally or more qualified soils located in the municipality of Gavorrano, in front of the ancient village of Giuncarico.
Right there was born the first and, up to now, only French-Italian joint venture project for wine production: the agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild put together the experience of Castellare in the cultivation and vinification of the main Tuscan vine Sangioveto and that of Chateau Lafite on French grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz. They were so born award-winning wines as Poggio alla Guardia , Sughere of Frassinello , Rocca di Frassinello and Vermentino.
Rocca di Frassinello became the protagonist of the challenge against the most famous italian wine, Masseto, in the spirit of the America's Cup, where whoever has the courage may become the Challenger and try to defeat the Defender: to win this challenge, the enologist Alessandro Cellai realized Baffonero, which takes its name from the homonym vineyard 100% merlot.
The name tells a Maremma's history: few yards from the vineyard, men and dogs gather to challenge the boar and the head of the hunt receive a name for the duration of the boar hunt: he is called Baffonero. Baffonero is a wine whose name tells not only these stories but, at the same time, recalls the power and elegance of the unique landscape of Maremma.
For the realization of the winery was chosen one of the most prestigious architet in the world, Renzo Piano, who has designed a winery essential in its design, but enhancing the functionality of what is and remains a factory: the architect paid a particular attention on the use of the force of gravity in the vinification process, so to ensure the highest quality for the wines.
Usually the design of wineries follows the cycle of the productive process order: from the spaces for the reception and the selection of the grape to the fermentation room and the barriquerie, to the warehouse.
Piano has revolutionized this concept, by placing at the center the barriquerie, underground to maintain a naturally stable humidity and temperature. A large 40 square meters for 40 with a huge roof that stands without any supporting column. All around the distribution of all the production cycle functions: on two sides are distributed the steel vats, above each of which, through a chute accessible from the roof above (the churchyard, calls it Piano), in harvest time, the grapes go falling down.
At Rocca di Frassinello it is now possible to rediscover the ancient wine-making traditions of Maremma through the visit of the experiential exhibition “Etruscans and wine at Rocca di Frassinello” inaugurated in 2015 based on the project of the architect Italo Rota.
The archaeological finds – mostly are jars and goblets used to drink wine – found inside the property during the recovery work of the Etruscan necropolis of San Germano (one of the most important archaelogical site of the territory of the ancient city of Vetulonia) allows the guests to jump back by centuries, to rediscover the wine traditions of a population that almost 3000 years ago already cultivated the vine in these lands.
In the Pavillon, the elegant ball room located on the terrace the guest will be transported in Modern Art: in 2014 Rocca di Frassinello celebrated the 10th Harvest with the project of the american artist and photographer David LaChapelle, who after visiting Rocca di Frassinello, wanted to express with his artwork “Rapture of the Grape” the respect for wine and its history, the aesthetic, the humilty and the strive for perfection that he felt among the people working at the winery. The LaChapelle masterpiece was donated to the winery and is now on permanent exhibition in Rocca di Frassinello .
